Is there such a thing as tipping in the restaurants in Hue, Hanoi, or the rest of Viet Nam for that matter?

Doug

No - there is no tipping that I have seen. I asked much the same question when I first got here, and was told the custom did not exist. Having said that, I'm not quite so sure about Ha Noi and Said Goon in the very fancy places. There are a lot of high-roller establishments in those two cities that are so westernized, you would think you were in Los Angeles or Dallas if you went in. I saw one advertisement in the English language newspaper hawking Secretary's Day.

But, in our homey Hue, there is no tipping. At 76 cents a bowl for my pho, you can imagine how much the girl who serves me takes home in pay.

Cottontimer

I'm in Saigon and I usually tip a little. I can tell that most of the time, it's totally unexpected. Other times, I get the feeling they think I'm giving too measly of a tip.

Khanh

In Saigon or Hanoi, it depends on the area. If it's in a high tourist area, tips are expected, but in some district, they don't know what to do if you tip them. Some might chase you down and give you your money back.
